4 from UB suspended in hazing

A University at Buffalo student required hospital treatment after he was covered with hot sauce and spray paint in a fraternity hazing incident Wednesday.

The student returned to class later in the day, authorities said.

He and several other students pledging an unrecognized chapter of Alpha Tau Omega were ordered to strip to their underwear and were covered with a liquid concoction of purple spray paint and red hot sauce, according to Buffalo police who broke up the hazing incident at about 2:30 a.m. in a Northrup Place house.

Four students were suspended, and two of them were criminally charged. The name of the young man taken to the hospital was not released, but UB's chief of police said a preliminary investigation determined he was well enough to later attend classes.

The students accused of the hazing could face tough consequences. "We treat hazing very seriously. It's possible they could face being expelled, the most severe sanction, or they could face other sanctions," said UB Police Chief Gerald W. Schoenle Jr.

Northeast District officers arrived at the three-story fraternity house at 44 Northrup after being flagged down by an individual at Main Street and Winspear Avenue.

When police tried to gain access to the house, student Kyle P. O'Shea, 20, of that address, slammed the door on them, police said.

Once the police gained entry, they determined that the situation was serious. The fraternity brothers had allegedly applied the mixture near the eyes, noses and mouths of the pledges, police said.

UB officials said the off-campus fraternity is not recognized by the university.

"Affiliation with these groups is a violation of the UB Student Code of Conduct and puts students at risk for suspension and/or expulsion from the university," said John DellaContrada, a UB spokesman.

University policy, he added, requires a permanent transcript notation for students who are found to be responsible for hazing incidents that involve the injury of another person.

Dennis Black, vice president of student affairs, encouraged students who encounter mistreatment to report it.

The national chapter of Alpha Tau Omega also distanced itself from the local group.

"ATO has not had a chapter on campus since April 6, 2002, when it was closed by the national fraternity due to lack of membership," said Wynn Smiley, chief executive officer of Alpha Tau Omega.

O'Shea and Jason S. Rosen, 20, also of the Northrup address, were charged with second-degree hazing and reckless endangerment. O'Shea also was charged with obstructing governmental administration, and Rosen faces an additional charge of criminal possession of marijuana.

The other two suspended students were identified as Timothy Sheridan, 20, and Adam Daniel, 20, of the Northrup residence.

"My officers referred all of them to [studentwide judiciary]. They are suspended pending an investigation," Schoenle said.

Reaction among UB students interviewed in the neighborhood of the fraternity house varied, with some saying it should not be tolerated and others explaining that it is part of the pledging process.

KABUL, Afghanistan

The bodies of 10 people, including eight foreigners, were recovered Friday in a remote area of Badakhshan province in northern Afghanistan, police said.

Provincial police chief Gen. Agha Noor Kemtuz said the victims, who had been shot, were found next to three bullet-riddled four- wheeled drive vehicles in Kuran Wa Munjan district.

He said two Afghan men were found dead along with eight others - three women and five men - whose nationalities were not known.

It was unclear what the group was doing in the forested area.

Kemtuz speculated that robbery could have been a motive in the killings. "We couldn't find any passports Christian Dior Watches or anything," he said.

"There have been almost 500 cases of babies born disabled or deformed at 20 longhouses in Ulu Baram. We don't know whether this is due to genetic, diet or other factors," said Senator Datin Seri Empiang Jabu.

She was speaking at the officiating of the formation of the Sarawak Chapter of the Pan Pacific and South-East Asia Women's Association (PPSEAWA), here, today.

She said so far, no study had been done by Unimas or any other higher learning institution on the phenomenon in Ulu Baram.

Empiang also called on non-governmental organisations like PPSEAWA to help improve the lot of rural women in the social and economic spheres.

She said the role of women had become increasingly important not only in managing the family but society as well.

Arizona, the Anti-Immigrant La

SIXTY-THREE MEN AND WOMEN STOOD BEFORE a federal judge in Tucson. Their wrists and ankles shackled, most had difficulty walking to the Tiffany Charms front of the court when their names were called. They wore the same dirty T-shirts and torn jeans they had on as they walked through triple-digit temperatures in the Arizona desert, where the Border Patrol arrested them for entering the United States without authorization. In less than half an hour, the judge sentenced 22 of them to prison time.

This was on May 24, more than two months before Arizona's draconian new immigration law was slated to go into effect. With SB 1070, as the new law is called, life for undocumented immigrants in Arizona is set to get a whole lot worse. As critics in both the United States and abroad have emphasized, the law institutionalizes racial profiling by requiring that local police demand papers from anyone they have a "reasonable suspicion" of being undocumented. It represents the cruelest attempt yet to close off the border, capping a nearly 20-year history in Arizona of cracking down on migrants.

The stage was set for SB 1070 in 2005, when the Department of Homeland Security launched Operation Streamline, a federal immigration-enforcement program that targets and charges first-time border crossers with "illegal entry." Operation Streamline is most significant for treating undocumented migration as a criminal, rather than a civil, infraction for the first time. Under the program's fast-food approach to due process, an average of 70 people are convicted and sentenced every weekday in Tucson, often within an hour.

That adds up to about 17,850 undocumented people who must face a judge each year in Tucson alone, and almost 7,000 who receive prison time, ranging from 30 days to six months. A re-entry charge carries a prison sentence of between two and 20 years. About half receive prison time, while the rest remain in jail as they go through the formal deportation process, their U.S. records permanently stained. These newly minted prisoners are then fed to Arizona's voracious private prisons, which constiute one of the only growth industries in a state hit hard by the recession.

According to Caroline Isaacs, program director of American Friends Service Committee's Tucson office, both Operation Streamline and SB 1070 culminate a shift begun in the 1990s to using "war-on-crime approaches to what can only be called the war on immigrants." SB 1070 will add a Class 1 trespassing misdemeanor for being in the state of Arizona without correct documents on top of Operation Streamline's illegal entry charge. The trespassing charge comes with a mandatory prison sentence of 20 days, and the migrant will have to pay for his or her jail costs. There are additional penalties, including potential prison time, for smuggling, harboring, and hiring immigrants, and even for being hired. These various provisions, Isaacs says, show that SB 1070 consists of "40 previous bills, all smushed together."

How did it come to this? Becks' kit shop is axed

THE shop that sold David Beckham his first pair of football boots 25 years ago has gone out of business.

Becks chose the family-run Sedgewick sports in Walthamstow, East London, as the venue for the worldwide launch of his personalised adidas range in 2004.

But the loss of school contracts and competition from supermarkets and retail chains has forced it to close.

Owner David Seth, 45, had a Saturday job when Becks was playing locally.

Mr Seth said that the star's parents would visit regularly to buy him kit.

He added: "When I was a youngster, they bought David's first pair of football boots from the shop."

Mr Seth and sister, Jacqueline Previ, 48, took over the shop from the Sedgewick family five years ago.

But Jacqueline said: "When supermarkets sell the stock at prices we can only buy it at, it's just impossible."

The Government yesterday promised reform of the libel laws to provide a "fair balance" between freedom of expression and protection of reputation.

Congress may leap at opportuni

Penn State geologists have estimated that the Marcellus Shale field contains more than 500 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas, whereas current national consumption is about 20 trillion cubic feet per year. And the Marcellus Shale field is just one of several large sources.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, about 10.5 percent of oil consumed nationally is in the form of diesel fuel. Pickens long has contended that natural gas could supplant petroleum-derived diesel as a principal motor fuel, especially for big trucks and buses. The technology is well-established. And since natural gas burns about 30 percent cleaner than oil-derived diesel, a large-scale conversion would produce much better air quality.

Meanwhile, the reduced reliance on oil and imports would help stabilize gasoline prices, free oil refining capacity in order to prevent seasonal price jumps, and create jobs in the gas and vehicle industries.

Northeast Pennsylvania, with unique proximity to gas fields and major highways, would be an ideal location for gas processing.

The Natural Gas Act would provide incentives, mostly as tax credits, for gas-fueled vehicle production and purchases, establishment of natural gas pumps at service stations, and so on.

Given the bill's potential for Pennsylvania, Sens. Bob Casey and Arlen Specter, and Reps. Chris Carney and Paul Kanjorski should Lamborghini Replica Watch be in the forefront of the effort to pass the Natural Gas Act.

DESIGN and engineering giant WS Atkins flagged up better than expected annual results yesterday as the group rides out "turbulent" global markets.

Epsom-based Atkins put the performance down to strong cost controls and an order book boosted by recent contract wins.

Atkins said profits for the year to March 31 will be "slightly ahead" of the consensus pounds 86m, although this is still down on last year's pounds 102.7m.

The firm - which is working on major projects such as the 2012 Olympic Park and the widening of the Fashion Dior Shoe M25 - has recently landed a pounds 350m 10-year road maintenance deal from Oxfordshire County Council.

It is also part of an international team which has won a contract to build an experimental nuclear fusion reactor in France.

"We continue to trade confidently in what remain turbulent economic conditions. Our work in hand is good, and we have recorded a number of recent wins," Atkins said.

Sunshine Spinach Salad

Makes 4-6 servings

4 cups spinach, trimmed, torn in pieces and chilled

3 oranges, peeled and sliced

1 avocado, peeled and sliced

1 small red onion, thinly sliced

1 cup raisins

cup slivered almonds, toasted

1 tablespoon sesame seeds, toasted

salt and pepper

Dressing

cup vegetable oil

cup wine vinegar

1 tablespoon sugar

1 teaspoon grated orange peel

teaspoon tarragon

dash nutmeg

Combine all salad ingredients except salt and pepper. Combine all dressing ingredients; blend well. Pour dressing over salad; add salt and pepper to taste. Gently toss and serve.

Helpful washing tips

The answer is simple: Food safety begins with clean running water. - Wash all fresh fruits and vegetables thoroughly with running water before cooking or serving them. This not only removes soil and bacteria, but also any chemical residues that might be present. Do not use soapy water to wash fruits and vegetables. Soap itself may leave a residue and who wants that?- Break apart vegetables that have tight heads, such as broccoli or cauliflower, before washing.- Do not soak produce. Rinse the produce under lukewarm running water or lift in and out of clean water. Lukewarm water is especially helpful when cleaning leafy vegetables such as spinach. Lukewarm water helps to open the crevices where the dirt may be trapped. Dip produce two or three times in clean water until no residue is seen on the bottom of cleaning container, such as the sink. Dipping produce in clean water is more efficient than soaking and reduces the loss of water-soluble nutrients.- Leafy vegetables, such as lettuce and cabbage, should have the outer leaves pulled off and discarded.
