The survey, released today, covers the period between April 1, 2009, and March 31, 2010. During that time foreign buyers, including those with residency outside the U.S. as well as recent immigrants and temporary visa holders, are estimated to have purchased $66 billion of U.S. residential property, or 7 percent of the residential market.

International buyers were reported in 39 states in 2010, but a slight majority of the total buyers are concentrated in Florida, California, Arizona and Texas. These four states account for 53 percent of purchases and have remained the top destinations for the past three years, with Florida and California remaining the top two destinations.

A proposed nuclear reactor in Maryland that is close to winning a billion-dollar federal loan guarantee would produce twice the energy of the state's two existing reactors combined.

But the project at Calvert Cliffs faces many hurdles.

"We have very strict quality control standards and it is much more difficult to establish that those standards are being met when so many parts are being built 10,000 miles away," he said.

The reactor Areva designed for Calvert Cliffs -- called an evolutionary pressurized reactor -- would be the first of its kind in the United States. Areva is piloting the newly minted technology in Finland -- where the reactor is now delayed three years and the cost has ballooned to 80 percent beyond contracted estimates.

"We decided to make Areva our technology partner because we will able to take all those lessons learned and incorporate them into our [Calvert Cliffs] project," she said.

Over 250,000 men, women and children would descend upon Port Dalhousie every summer, coming by large steamships, small boats, trolleys and Model-T Fords, dressed in their weekend finery and ready for a good time. And a good time they had -- it was the bee's knees, you could say.

Dance-crazy flappers shook, trotted and tangoed in the dance hall. Bathers clad in midthigh or longer suits splashed in the waters of Lake Ontario. Youngsters slid down the popular water slide, which was kept wet at all times to avoid a burnt bottom. The theater's cozy interior, with its wood-panel walls, stained glass, Tiffany lamps and wrought-iron staircases, provides an intimate experience where the audience is never more than 15 feet from the stage. We were thoroughly impressed with their professional production of Neil Simon's "Plaza Suite" when we visited. "The Rocky Horror Show" is playing through Aug. 7; "A Country Legend: The Pasty Cline Show" opens Aug. 13. The restaurant patio is a prime spot to soak up the convivial lakeside atmosphere.

H.J. Heinz Company announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire Foodstar, a manufacturer of soy sauces and fermented bean curd in China, from Transpac Industrial Holdings, a private equity holding company, and various Transpac Funds.

In a release dated June 21, the Company said the acquisition of Foodstar would increase Heinz's annual sales in China to about $300 million and enable Heinz to enter the nation's $2 billion retail soy sauce market.

The purchase price consists of a cash payment at closing of $165 million and an earn-out potentially payable in 2014 based on the performance of the business. The completion of the proposed acquisition is subject to regulatory approval in China and other customary conditions.
